Thoughts for Thursday
With Halloween coming and the kiddos all excited for their annual sugary plundering, I thought it would be good to put up a few halloween safety tips. As parents, we want our children to be safe, but have fun, too. I think that may be why “Trunk or Treat” became such a popular thing so fast. No worries about crossing streets or stranger danger. However, if you’re going to be out and about, knocking on doors with your hooligans, here’s a few things to keep in mind:
Cross the street at corners, using traffic signals and crosswalks. Look left, right and left again when crossing and keep looking as you cross. We do this in our cars while driving, it only makes sense to do it when walking around, too!
For the love of all that is holy, put the electronic devices down and pay attention to your surroundings. Honestly, people, your child is more important.
Always walk on sidewalks or paths. If there are no sidewalks, walk facing traffic as far to the left as possible.
Have kids carry glow sticks or flashlights to help them see and be seen by drivers. Decorate costumes and bags with reflective tape or stickers and, if possible, choose light colors. Make sure you purchase/select a costume that is the right size, as well, to avoid trips & falls. Choose face paint and makeup whenever possible instead of masks, which can obstruct a child’s vision.
Check candy before allowing your child to eat it. Check for tampering, spoilage, allergenic ingredients, homemade treats, choking hazards, and missing wrappers—you just never know!
If these aren’t enough tips for you, do a google search! It’s always, ALWAYS, better to be safe than sorry when it comes to your kids ♥
