Technique Tuesday: Color
Color is one of the most important choices a designer makes when creating products for both digital and paper scrappers alike. As a scrapper, color is also an important choice when designing our layouts – not just the color we find in the products we use, but the color in our photos, too. Some scrappers struggle to take photos to match the products in their stash, while others struggle to find the “perfect” kits for the photos they already have. A simple solution to both of these problems is to go with monochromatic color schemes.
Monochromatic color schemes are obtained from one single hue along with that hue’s tints and shades:
From tints and shades of red, right on down the rainbow to tints and shades of pinks, you have an infinite number of color schemes to choose from – including tints and shades of black. Black monochromatic color schemes are the easiest and (in my opinion) the most fun to scrap with. Instead of tinting your photo black and white, try leaving your photo in full color and scrapping it on a page using black, gray and white papers and elements. To twist it up a bit, pick a dominant color from your photo and add papers and elements that are in tints and shades of that color.
For example, chigirl scrapped this photo in grays and whites and chose to add elements that were the same color as the headphones in the photo:
On this beautiful page by jirsev, you can see that she added a few colors of elements to accent her full color photo on the black and white background:
dkane chose to scrap these photos in grays, whites and orange:
You can, of course, turn your photo black and white and then scrap it in monochromatic blacks like Tina1978 did on this page, adding light blue elements as well to make the page pop:
Pippin took her page one step further – not only is her page black and white with shocks of pink, but she turned her photo black and white and highlighted the girl’s hair and lips with the same pink she used on the page:
All of these are perfect examples of monochromatic page and you can see just how magical the end result can be! I would love to see you try this out for yourself, so if you do, leave a comment and link me up!
