My name is Femke. I am 51 years old and have been married to my husband Luke for 27 years. Together we have a son of 17. We live in the Netherlands in a village near Amsterdam. In daily life, I work as a freelance designer and do the bookkeeping of our joint company.

As an “antidote” to my perfectionism, I’ve started to focus more on the creative process rather than the final result, and what helps me a lot is interacting with creative people. Once a week I go to art school to take mixed media painting classes, and I really enjoy it!

DESiGNER Q & A

How would you describe your designing style?

I would prefer to describe my style as a distinct style consisting of a quirky mix of pleasant messiness combined with intentional imperfection. I produce all my products completely by myself ( also without a.i.) they are often scraps from the garden, from packaging materials or from work I create. I love turning “trash into treasure”.

Authenticity very important to me. In fact, I don’t just want to invent and create everything myself, but it also has to really come from my heart. If my heart doesn’t make a little jump, it’s not going to happen.

I find it important to challenge myself and people around me to reflect. Because of the layering in my work, most themes can be approached literally and metaphorically.

Please tell us which of your products in your shop is your most favorite and why?

If I have to choose then the Metaphors Bird’s Nest BONUS collection is my favorite. With this collection, everything immediately fell into place. I had so much fun making these that I even included the templates. A few weeks ago I had the backgrounds and cards printed on real paper. They look amazing! The colors really appeal to me and so does the theme because I am a worrier by nature.
