Mary and I have been friends since high school. We met in art class, and art became the glue that bonded our friendship. We are complete opposites. Shes blond ... Im brunette. She is outgoing ... I am a shy wallflower. She is adventurous ... I am cautious. She drew me out of my shell, and we had a ball! We were inseparable during high school. Our classmates nicknamed us Fric and Frac, because it was rare to see one of us without the other. Sadly, our parents decided that we were too attached and dependent on each other, and we were forced to go to different colleges. In retrospect, we believe this decision caused both of us to have difficulties in our college years. I never finished ... she struggled. Without the support of each other, the struggles we encountered navigating the college years caused both of us to stumble. We both muddled through, and now we are both married and have children. The paths of our lives crisscrossed several times over the years, but we finally lost touch when she moved to Italy. Several years ago I started to search for her. I found her through her website, and we were able to reconnect. She lives back in the US ... in fact we both live in Virginia. We continue to stay in touch with phone calls, texting, Facebook and occasionally we actually get to visit face-to-face. Shes my best friend ... the kind that no matter how much time has passed ... our conversations pick up right where they left off. Recently I had the strongest urge to let her know that she matters to me. I texted, and then emailed. She picked up the phone to call and let me know that the feeling is mutual...
