first I chose this picture of my daughter, duplicated it, the top picture I cropped so only a small portion of the colour picture was visible, the lower picture I turned black and white and played around with the levels, I then turned the blend mode of the bottom layer to luminosity to achieve the painted on look on the back ground paper.
