Four years since Aaron had his introductory flight (15 Feb 2020) and today I finally got to fly with him.... so awesome to share in this amazing adventure of #becomingapilot and very proud of my boy.
Today was absolutely gorgeous weather for flying... a little hazy in places and somewhat windy up there... and don't forget HOT at 30°C but really the perfect day to fly.
We left home early (8am) as Aaron wanted to get there and do the necessary paperwork so we would have time for the checks and fuel and such.... well he did the paperwork but we had to wait for the plane as it was out on another flight. That instructor (Lourens) kindly filled the plane with avgas so we didn't have to worry about doing it. Aaron did the preflight checks and got us ready to go just around 10:20am... we took off at 10:52... and landed at 12:07. The flight wasn't as noisy as I expected from an engine/wind point of view, but was noisy with all the radio chatter from other planes up in the air.
The views are amazing.... lovely to see places I know from up there... and some look very different too.
We flew from Lanseria to Harties and saw the dam, then along the northern ridge of the GF up to the Concrete Tower landmark. Turned left and flew over vast farmlands down to Epop... a beacon landmark... I think west of Soweto. Turned left and flew over Soweto... virtually came out where the N12/Nasrec interchange is. Turned north and flew past FNB stadium, saw Jhb in the haze, recognised SABC tower, flew over Northcliff Ridge and headed towards our home.... we did a few turns over the area spying our house, the shops, our church, Granny's home ... and then on towards the Dome before heading back to Lanseria to land (in a cross wind too!). Aaron warned me it would be a bumpy landing but it didn't seem to be to me considering the wind.
Was really so special to experience flying with Aaron... he flew so well. Can't wait to go again.
