When I was working in China, my Dad visited me in the Summer of 1987. One day we hired a car and drove north into the hills where we spent the day exploring the ruins of the Great Wall at Gubei Kou. I am not sure what it is like now, but at that time it was totally free of tourists and anyone. Just wandering around the hills on our own - definitely a treasured memory.
