Journaling: Max was the beginning of our family, so although we have 4 dogs now, and a few have come and gone, Max will always be the dog that I have the fondest memories of. I mean really, Max was with us longer than our kids have been! We got him when he was a puppy from a shelter a few years after we moved in to our house. I remember at first, he was so timid and shy - that lasted for a few weeks. Pretty soon he was running aroung the coffee table in the living room and we called him “Circus Maximus”.
   For several years. he was the only dog in the house and really seemed to enjoy the position.  Then the boys came along, a couple of new kittens, another puppy and he really seemed to enjoy that, too! He would lay on his perch on the couch and keep an eye on the boys and the new animals, sometimes coming down to play. 
   When each of the boys were born, he was so in tune to them. I remember at first when Alex or Ian would cry for what he thought was too long, he would howl, kinda like saying “hey parents, do your job”
   Anyway, for years he was the canine presence in our house and definitely one of the sweetest dogs I’ve known. He made it through the hardest years for a dog - when kids are going through the toddler stage and was a best friend for both of my boys.  So, I’m sure Max, our Elder Statesman, has earned his rest!
