Being named Soldier of the Quarter is a big deal. Winning it twice is a bigger deal. Being named Soldier of the Year for the base is bigger yet. I was truly honored and humbled. Then came the board for Soldier of the Year for the command. I was disappointed that, although I won by several points after standing the board examination, I was not awarded the designation because I was due to leave the Army before a year was up and could not be the role model the Army needed me to be. So, the first runner up got the title. Ah, 1980 would have been an interesting year!
