Summer Alphabet,
Katie Pertiet: Sun Prints No. 3 Brushes N Stamps
journaling:
Every June we get the postcard in the mail telling us that the plantation is open and the
hours in which we can come pick the fruit. First, a trip to the grocery store for pectin to
gel the jam, and cream cheese to make the muffins. The only thing better than a dish of
fresh blueberries is a warm piece of blueberry cake, fresh out of the oven, with a dollop
of whipped cream and a glass of milk for the children,
or a cup of brewed coffee for the adults.
This suffices as a delicious lunch on a hot summer
afternoon. To partake of the fruit of one's
labors tends to build character and strengthen personality.
Or so I tell the children.
We always go to pick at the very earliest date possible, for
the summers here in the southern United States arrive early
and with full force. I never have gotten used to them, but
I have learned to take advantage of the bounty they have to
offer. For with every wave of heat comes along with straw-
berries, blueberries, blackberries and finally toward summers
end, the peaches.
