In the 1700's England had laws that made couples wait to get married until they were 21 unless they had their parent's permission. Across the border into Scotland they could marry at 16 and anyone could marry them as long as they had two witnesses. So couples would elope by running to Scotland and Gretna Green was right across the border. The blacksmith would marry them for a drink or a few cents. Many times the parents were chasing them all the way!
