On February 4, 2023 A Norfolk and Southern train with 151 cars (21 carrying
toxic chemicals derailed near East Palestine, Ohio. Terrible fumes were
released into the air and nearby residents were evacuated. Over the next
few days goverment and railway officials did a “controlled burn” to avoid
explosions. These chemicals are now in the air and water. No one knows
what long term effects there will be. People have been allowed to return
to their homes, but no one feels safe. The people living there don’t know
if the water or air is safe. They fear for their health and the safety of
their children. They worry about the value of their property. Most are
fairly low income and have very little resources to fall back on. How far
the contamination will spread is also unknown. Government officials tell
them the water and air are safe, but many have headaches and health issues.
These issues are also showing up in people working on the clean up. I’m
lucky I live nearly 100 miles from this, but I’m very worried about these
