Hi at all - my name is Gina and I am hosting this week's Technique Challenge.
It's about warped shadows.

We often use shadows on our layouts. I know we all love our normal settings.
That is absolutely ok.

But did you ever think about to create this more interesting?

I will show you some examples how you can change a shadow.

The first important thing is: your shadow must be on a separate layer.

Click in your Layer Palette on the Effects (not on the layer),
right click on your mouse
and choose Create Layer in the context menu

shadow2.jpg

With the transformation tool you have some options.
Size – Rotate – Skew – Distort – Perspektive - Warp
(I am using Photoshop – in other programs this will be different).

One of the easiest way to change parts of a shadow is the Warp tool.
In my example I use a bow.

shadow1.jpg

It is better to use a shadow with a small Distance and Size.

On your shadow layer
go to Edit -> Tranform -> Warp

You will now see a grid.

shadow3.jpg

You can move the corner points or the intersections in the grid.

shadow4.jpg

The next shadow you can use for a title.
Here too, the shadow should not be too large.

On your shadow layer
go to Edit ->Transform -> Distort.

shadow5.jpg

You can move all tranform points now until the shadow according to your wish.

shadow6.jpg

The next shadow is optinal because I don’t know if this filter is in other programs, too.
But I wouldn’t like to go without showing you the Filter Liquify.

I chose a paper and built a paper section.
The paper section get a shadow.

shadow7.jpg

Now I would like to give the paper section the appearance of standing out a bit.

On your shadow layer go to Filter → Liquify.
Try this properties (you can change them if you like)

shadow8.jpg

You will see the shadow in a big preview.
Go with the center of the brush tool to the bottom edge and slide it a little bit to the right side.

This is the result.

Now it’s up to you!

Create a layout in your own style
and use a warped shadow on at least an element, title or a paper.

My example page

I used for it Loving Each Day – Bundle by Chunlin Designs

Have fun!
Looking forward to your layouts.

Thank you for the challenge, Gina! I love playing with shadows. I used the warped tool on the bow, the frame and some of the greens.

What a fantastic page, Dorci - I like the color scheme and your warped shadows turn out great - the chosen photo fit perfectly.
Thank you so much for taking part in the challenge.

Here is mine: |(|I used the warped shadow on the bow, the string and the frame)

Gorgeous page, dhariana - I like the different colors and the added word strips (the fit so perfectly to the photo) - your warped shadows are carefully chosen - well done.
Thank you so much for taking part in the challenge.

Well, this was a huge challenge as I use PSE19 - which does not have the ability to have shadows on a separate layer.
I was able to make shadows of the words Dream and Weaver by duplicating the word and moving it below the word, change the color to a soft gray, flip it upside down then use the Transform - Perspective and adjust the opacity to 50%. .

I duplicated the large sunflower tag, simplified it and changed the color to a soft gray. set the opacity to 50%, made it a bit larger than the tag and set it at a slight angle under the sunflower tag with a bit of shadow showing at upper left corner and more showing at the lower right corner.

I hope that these 2 shadows will meet the criteria for this challenge.

I'm working with PSP and used the warpbrush tool
on the string , the bow and I tried to make an uneven paperfold on the cloudy paper.
Gorgeous page, Anja - I like the papers and the chosen elements - your warped shadows turn out great. I know to work with the Liquify Filter isn't easy but I really appreciate that you tried it.
Thank you so much for taking part in the challenge.

Gorgeous page, Bernice - I like the split background and the color scheme to highlight the beautiful photo of the African Violet. The warped shadow on the string looks fabulous.
Thank you so much for taking part in the challenge.

Gorgeous page, Kay - I love the background and the chosen elements as well as the colors - your warped shadow on the title is so beautifully done - thank you for sharing your way to get a separate layer for the shadow.
Thank you so much for taking part in the challenge.

Thank you for the tutorial Gina! Here's mine!
I used the warped shadow on the left hand side of the frame, the first and last torn paper circles, on the label, and the clouds.

Fantastic page, May - I love the way you split the background with the clouds. Your warped shadows turn out great and give the layout a lot of depth.
Thank you so much for taking part in the challenge.
